Becoming a Christian

What is it that Christians believe? How do you become a Christian?
Those are big questions and you will probably have lots of other questions you want to ask that we won’t be able to answer on one page of a website! We would therefore recommend that you come along on a Sunday and have a chat with one of us, or sign up and come along to an Alpha Course. In the meantime, on this page we will try to give you a quick 4 step summary of what a Christian is and how to become one.

Step One

God’s Purpose: Peace and Life

How to become a Christian - Step 1God is our creator and our father – He loves us with an incomparable love. He wants us to experience abundant and eternal life filled with good things that we are often told about in the Bible:

“I have come that they may have life, and that they may have it more abundantly.”  John 10 v 10

“May the God of hope fill you with all joy and peace as you trust in him, so that you may overflow with hope by the power of the Holy Spirit.”  Romans 15 v 13

“But all who listen to me will live in peace, untroubled by fear of harm.”  Proverbs 1 v 33

God makes His plan for us clear throughout the Bible. Why, then, do so many people not experience this abundant life that we’ve been promised?

Step Two

The Problem: Our Separation

How to become a Christian - Step 2God created us in His own image to have an abundant life. He did not make us as robots to automatically love and obey Him. God gave us a will and a freedom of choice. We chose to disobey God and go our own way. We still make this choice today. This results in separation from God.

“For all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God.”   Romans 3 v 23

Our Attempts to Reach God

How to become a Christian - Step 2People try in many ways to bridge this gap between themselves and God. They may decide to give money to charity, resolve to not tell lies, or even go to church every Sunday, all in an attempt to gradually work their way towards God and prove themselves ‘good enough’ for Him.

However, our sinful nature means it is inevitable that we will fail. We will never work our way up to God in His holy and perfect nature. Temptation will always lead us astray. The bridges we’ve tried to build will come crashing down, leaving us wholly separated from God.

“There is a way that seems right to a man, but in the end it leads to death.”   Proverbs 14 v 12

“But your iniquities have separated you from your God; your sins have hidden his face from you, so that he will not hear.”   Isaiah 59 v 2

No bridge reaches God … except one.

Step Three

God’s Bridge: The Cross

How to become a Christian - Step 3The Bible tells us that the punishment for sin is death.

However, because of God’s great love for us, He sent His son Jesus to die for our sins. Even though Jesus was without sin and therefore not deserving of punishment, He was nailed to a cross and crucified in order to endure the punishment meant for us. By paying our penalty, He bridged the gap between people and God, meaning we are free to come before God as His beloved children.

Three days after he was killed, Jesus rose from the grave.

“But God raised him from the dead, freeing him from the agony of death, because it was impossible for death to keep its hold on him.” Acts 2 v 24

Jesus’s victory over death is something that we are invited to share, by spending eternity with God in heaven.

“Whoever believes in him will not perish but have eternal life” John 3 v 15

“For Christ died for sins once for all, the righteous for the unrighteous, to bring you to God.”  1 Peter 3 v 18

“But God demonstrates his own love for us in this: While we were still sinners, Christ died for us.”  Romans 5 v 8

God has provided the only way and each person must make a choice.

Step Four

Our Response: Receive Christ

We must trust Jesus Christ as Lord and Saviour and receive Him by personal invitation. The Bible says …
How to become a Christian - Step 4

“Here I am! I stand at the door and knock. If anyone hears my voice and opens the door, I will come in and eat with him, and he with Me.” Revelation 3 v 20

“Yet to all who received Him, to those who believed in His name, He gave the right to become children of God.” John 1 v 12

“If you confess with your mouth, ‘Jesus is Lord,’ and believe in your heart that God raised Him from the dead, you will be saved.” Romans 10 v 9

Where are you?

Will you receive Jesus Christ right now?

Here is how you can receive Christ:

How to become a Christian - Step 4

  • Admit your need (I am a sinner).
  • Be willing to turn from your sins (repent).
  • Believe that Jesus Christ died for you on the Cross and rose from the grave.
  • Through a simple prayer, invite Jesus Christ to come in and control your life through the Holy Spirit (receive Him as Lord and Saviour).

“For it is by grace you have been saved, through faith–and this not from yourselves, it is the gift of God–not by works, so that no one can boast.” Ephesians 2 v 8-9

“He who has the Son has life; he who does not have the Son of God does not have life. I write these things to you who believe in the name of the Son of God so that you may know that you have eternal life.” 1 John 5 v 12-13
