The book of Ecclesiastes emphasises the necessity for fearing God in a fallen, and therefore frequently confusing and frustrating world. Because of sin, the world is self-referencing, transient and despite its best efforts, hopelessly sliding into decay. Romans 8:18 says that creation is “subject to futility”; Ecclesiastes uses the same original word, which is translated “vanity”. Do we have any hope of figuring out life? Yes! By seeking God first and taking refuge in him. Only a close walk with Jesus empowered by his Spirit will ultimately enable us to make sense of every season of life.
